The City is hosting an in-person “Know Your Rights” workshop on Monday, January 20, at 6 p.m., in the Parasol Room of the Morton Civic Center, 2100 Ridge Ave.
As the new federal administration takes office, please join us for a “Know Your Rights” workshop to learn about Evanston’s updated Welcoming City ordinance and how our elected officials plan to protect all residents, regardless of immigration or citizenship status.
"In this time of uncertainty, Evanston is committed to doing all we can to protect our residents. I appreciate the participation of valued partners with deep expertise on this subject matter, and I would welcome any and all community members to participate," said Mayor Daniel Biss.
Gaining awareness of individual rights equips people with the knowledge and tools necessary to navigate challenging situations, such as profiling, discrimination, exploitation, mistreatment, or abuse. This understanding not only helps individuals respond appropriately when an immigration enforcement official arrives at their door but also guides them in locating valuable resources to address these issues effectively. By becoming informed, individuals can take proactive steps toward ensuring their rights are respected and upheld.
Fred Tsao is the Senior Policy Counsel at the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights. Mr. Tsao provides technical support, training, and presentations on immigration-related topics to service providers, immigrant community organizations, and others who work with immigrants. He also provides updates and analysis of changes in immigration policies and procedures to ICIRR members and allies, and assists with the coalition's legislative advocacy efforts. A self-described “recovering attorney,” Fred practiced law at the Rockford office of Prairie State Legal Services, where he worked after receiving his law degree from the University of Michigan. He has also worked with the American Civil Liberties Union of Illinois, the Chicago Anti-Hunger Federation, and the Missouri Public Interest Research Group. A native of Chicago, Fred is the son of immigrants from China, and has had a lifelong concern with immigration issues.
Gwendolyn Margil is the Legal Director at Latinos Progresando. The agency provides professional, affordable immigration legal services to thousands of families from more than 40 countries annually. It is recognized by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and staffed by DOJ-accredited representatives.
