About Open Data

The City of Evanston’s Open Data Program promotes transparency, accountability, and public engagement by providing open access to municipal data. Established in 2017 following a City Council resolution, the program empowers residents, businesses, researchers, and City staff to leverage data for informed decision-making, strategic planning, and service improvement.

The Open Data Portal (data.cityofevanston.org) serves as the City’s central hub for publicly available datasets, maps, reports, and data stories. It is guided by a data governance policy and a commitment to regularly updating and expanding data offerings.

In 2021, Evanston became the first city under 100,000 residents to earn a What Works Cities Silver Certification from Bloomberg Philanthropies, recognizing its commitment to data-driven governance. The award highlighted the City’s innovative efforts, including the “My City, Your City, Our City” youth engagement and violence prevention initiative during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Through open data, Evanston fosters innovation, builds public trust, and supports collaborative solutions to community challenges.
